Experiments in Love – Listening from the Heart

by Micah Mortali

Some people listen; others wait to speak. We tend to think good listeners are born that way. But conscious listening, the willingness to listen fully with an open heart, can be a learned practice. To start, it helps to notice how you respond to conversations, which tends to be in one of three ways:

Subjectively: “Oh, the same thing happened to me!” (I’m more interested in myself.)

Objectively: “That’s nice. (I’m listening but not too deeply.)

Intuitively:” I hear you. What else do you want to say about that?” The intuitive listener notices body language and tone of voice and responds accordingly. This is often easier said than done, particularly when faced with charged conversations.

Try practicing the following, especially when it’s difficult. Allow the other person to speak without interruption. Notice if you’re formulating a response while listening rather than just being present. Resist the urge to offer advice unless asked. Experiment with mirroring, or reflecting back what you heard. (“What I’m hearing is ….. Did I get that?”) Mirroring build trust by showing the speaker that you are listening. It also gives you, the listener, insight into your ability to hold space. These techniques may feel forced at first, but conscious listening is a practice. As with any new skill, it gets easier. It can become an habitual way of responding.

Micah Mortali teaches yoga programmes at Kripalu and lives in the Bershires with his wife and children.

We suffer from stress when our bodies are no longer in rhythm with a consistent life style. With that in mind, how can we create consistency in our daily lives? Try these simple suggestions drawn from the wisdom of Ayurvedic, a life science that emphasizes the importance of daily routine in creating ongoing health.

Get into harmony with the rhythm of Nature:

Go to bed at around 10:00 –11:00pm regularly

Wake up around sunrise

Prepare for restful sleep:

Have your last meal or snack at least two hours before bedtime

Turn off the computer and TV at least one hour before bedtime.

Wash and massage tired feet.

Spend a few minutes stretching

Take a few deep breaths.

Rehydrate with luke warm or hot water. (Most of us are dehydrated, which can lead to frustration and agitation):

Begin each day with a big mug of hot water. Add lemon, if preferred.

Avoid excessively cold or iced drinks, which are more difficult to digest.

Avoid drinking large amounts of liquids with or around meals.

For ease, carry around a reusable water bottle and enjoy at least six cups of water a day. (if you drink caffeine, you’ll need an additional cup of water for each caffeinated beverage you consume.)

When we create consistency, the body and mind know what to expect, and stress will decrease naturally.

Creating Breathing Room

Let’s face it, life is a busy place. How can we find the time to slow down and catch our breath? What helps me is “breathing room”. A time or place that I set aside to reconnect with myself. It is not so much about finding an external location but about permission to create a space to go with it – it is the internal room we make inside our hearts.

To begin, ask yourself what would feel really good. What makes you feel lighter and inspired? You may want to hold an object of emotional value or wear mala beads. Whatever feels right to you. Breathing room can be a ritual; a cup of green tea with a piece of dark chocolate. The same everyday or different each time.

Think about timing. When do I most need to breathe, for me, its after cooking dinner, the 15 mins when everything is simmering and there is nothing left to do. I practice deep breathing, so I can really enjoy our family time afterwards, having taken a moment for myself.

Turn off anything that brings you back into the “doing” world, such as phones, and computers. Find a comfortable place where you can be present with yourself for a time and enjoy. Whether its yogic breathing, chanting mantras, praying, or speaking gratitude this is important time for your body, mind, spirit, and soul.

Just five to ten minutes per day can go a long way. I invite you to create some more breathing room in your life and see what happens.

CHOCOLATE CHIP FAVOURITES

Is chocolate your guilty pleasure? You may not have to feel so guilty about it! If you eat certain types in moderation, then chocolate can be a pleasurable part of a healthy diet. According to some studies, cocoa and other forms of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, may help keep your heart healthy and your blood pressure down. They contain high amounts of flavonols, plant compounds with strong antioxidant properties that help maintain healthy blood flow and pressure and ward off cardiovascular disease. So, as the smell of chocolate is in the air, enjoy the recipe for chocolate chip cookies below.

Chocolate Chip Favorites (Cookies)

You can use barley malt chips or chocolate chips, depending on how sweet you like your cookies. (If you use barley malt chips, do not overbake, because the chips tend to caramelize quickly and become hard.)

Preparation time 20 minutes.
Baking time 10 minutes.
Cooling time variable.
Makes 30 cookies.

Ingredients
¾ cup butter, at room temperature
1 cup rice syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 egg
2½ cups unbleached white flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups barley malt chips or chocolate chips
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Instructions
Preheat oven to 375° F. In a large bowl, cream the butter with an electric mixer at medium speed until fluffy. Add the syrup and vanilla and cream at a medium speed until fluffy. Add the egg and beat until fluffy.

In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat at low speed until smooth. Add the chips and walnuts and mix at low speed until well combined.

Drop the dough by rounded teaspoon on a well-oiled baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom. Let cool on wire racks or serve warm.

This soothing practice is always just a breath away. The three part yogic breath, called “Dirgha Pranayama” in Sanscript, is a simple way to relax and recharge yourself. It can be done anywhere, anytime, to help you re-centre and become more present in your body and more energetically alive.

To begin, come into seated alignment, if sitting on a chair, press the feet flat on the floor, tilting forward slightly. If seated on the floor, find a comfortable cross legged or kneeling position with or without a cushion. It is important to be comfortable. Ground your weight down into both sitting bones and lengthen your spine by lifting the ribcage away from the waist. Roll your shoulders back and down to create space in your chest and abdomen. Tuck your chin and lengthen the back of your neck. Press up through the crown of your head.

Begin slow, deep, rhythmic breathing. Inhale through your nose and feel the belly expand as the base of the lungs fill. Let the inhalation rise into the ribcage and all the way up to the chest. Then exhale through the nostrils and feel the chest, ribs, and belly gently release as the lungs empty. You can close your eyes to help stay focused and calm.

Repeat this for several minutes. Then relax your body and breathe naturally. Place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest and observe the effects. Enjoy often.

LIFE post-stress by Susan B. Lord

Einstein taught us that energy can never be destroyed; it can only be liberated into creative potential and transformed into something else – perhaps something wonderful.

The Kripalu lifestyle of nourishment and deep relaxation helps you gather your energy into the present moment. Meditation and yoga are tools of liberation, and delicious whole foods are the fuel for transformation. You may find that you have more energy here and from a physiological point of view, you really do. Stress, kidnaps your energy, leaving you tired, less vibrant. This is when anxiety, depression, and physical illness are likely to develop.

The beauty of coming to Kripalu is that for a period of time, you can step out of the stress of your daily life and observe who you would be without it. Your visit here gives you a touchstone for the possibility of living your life differently.

We are learning more everyday about the fascinating concept of neuroplasticity, the science behind how we change. This concept teaches us that focused attention with emotional commitment activates specific areas of the brain. At Kripalu, you have the opportunity to refocus your attention.

At home, continue to be curious about who you are. Notice your thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behaviour. They are key gateways into living a more present and dynamic life.
